Thoughts on Wedding Photography from Lindsay, one of our trainees

I think that wedding photography is much more difficult than it looks. Firstly, there are so many memories to capture all at the same time. I never took the time to think about how you would manage to take photographs of the bride and groom getting ready at the same time, often at different venues. There’s also the whole timing issue to get used to. Having worked with Nick and Anne from Footprint Photography it makes perfect sense to me now.

The pictures should tell a story as the day unfolds instead of the couple getting photographs that appear separated by the events of the day e.g. photographs of the groom getting ready, then photographs of the bride getting ready etc.

For me, one of the biggest challenges has been lighting and timing. You’re often expected to take photographs indoors and outdoors at different times of the day and remembering to adjust all your camera settings can be difficult to do quickly. Especially when you’re trying to let the events flow naturally and not to intrude too much! I’ve also found that I’ve spotted a moment in time that I want to capture but it’s over so quickly and there’s also the problem of people moving in front of you when you’re about to take the key photograph!! It can be very frustrating.

I’ve learned that it takes a lot of knowledge, practice and patience to get the photographs you want. Having the right equipment to do the job is essential. You may see something you want to photograph but without the correct equipment it will never look it’s best. It’s also important to be able to communicate with the bride and groom so that you understand exactly what they want. You may have ideas of what will work and it’s good to share these ideas, but ultimately it’s the bride and grooms decision. At the end of the day, it’s their expectations that need to be met.

When I have worked with Nick and Anne as a trainee, assistant and 3rd camera at weddings they just make everything look so easy and calm but still get all the shots that tell the story of the day. They do it in such a relaxed manner that they put everyone at ease, from the bride and groom right down to the photography assistant too.

I can’t recommend them highly enough
